The Return of Griner and Taurasi

After a difficult 2022 season, the Phoenix Mercury are looking to bounce back in 2023. All-star center Brittney Griner missed the majority of the previous year due to injury, but she’s back and ready to dominate the paint once again. Diana Taurasi, one of the greatest players in WNBA history, also had a shortened 2022 season due to injury, but she’s healthy and ready to lead the team once again.

The Roster

In addition to Griner and Taurasi, the Mercury have a talented roster of players. Skylar Diggins-Smith, Kia Nurse, and Brianna Turner are all returning from the 2022 season and are expected to play key roles in the team’s success. The team also added several new players, including guard Tiffany Mitchell and forward Natalie Achonwa.

The Coach

The Mercury’s head coach, Sandy Brondello, has been with the team since 2014 and has led them to two WNBA championships. She’s known for her strong defensive schemes and ability to get the best out of her players. With Brondello at the helm, the Mercury have a great chance to make a deep playoff run.

The Schedule

The Mercury will play a total of 36 regular season games in 2023, with 18 home games at Footprint Center. The season kicks off on May 15th with a road game against the Los Angeles Sparks. The Mercury’s home opener is on May 21st against the Chicago Sky.

Predictions

With Griner and Taurasi back and healthy, the Mercury are expected to be a top team in the WNBA in 2023. The addition of new players along with the return of key veterans gives the team a lot of depth and flexibility. If they can stay healthy and find their rhythm early in the season, the Mercury have what it takes to win their third championship under Sandy Brondello’s leadership.
